America is turning 250. But whose America are we celebrating? Whose histories became history? Whose fantasies became fact? And what might America become if we imagine it again, together?
Seven years in the making, the award-winning Historical Fantasy of America is The Haus of Glitter’s genre-defying dance opera, activist mermaid fairytale and glitter-filled reckoning with the stories America tells about itself.
Born from The Haus of Glitter’s three-year creative occupation and public intervention at the historic Esek Hopkins House in Providence, the work transforms years of performance, preservation, protest, ritual and collective imagination into an otherworldly journey through history, fantasy and the depths of the sea.
Rooted in lineages from Mali, the Narragansett Nation, Tejano and Mexicano borderlands, Cabo Verde and Laos, the production brings together a massive ensemble with original music, dance, theatre, ritual, fashion, projection, puppetry, spectacular costumes and a brand-new set.
After four years of bringing our work around the world, we’re gathering back in Providence, the city and community that helped build this work from the ground up, for its most expansive realization yet.
But this night is bigger than a show.
We’re gathering an extraordinary room of artists, culture-bearers, chosen family, movement-builders, beautiful weirdos and beloved community from Providence and beyond. And when the show ends:
